Q: You’re proud of your glamorous featuring artists. How did you recruit them?
Tablo: Tukutz is in charge of recruiting.
Tukutz: They all willingly gave us their time when I asked tem. My recruitment know-how is to get to the point straight away so they don’t have time to think about what I want. I don’t create an atmosphere of “I think this guy is going to ask me for a favor” by saying “are you busy? Let’s get some food together”. I don’t give them time to think, I just say “are you busy? Do you have some time? We’ve got a good song, let’s do it together”, and they respond.
Q: I’m curious about the behind story of you recruiting IU and Hyukoh for your title tracks.
Tablo: We’ve had some songs in the past that we wished IU would participate in. But there have been times when it fell through because we didn’t think we could get her on board. Then all of a sudden IU contacted us saying she likes our song “Don’t Hate Me” and asked us to come sing it at her concert, so we were immensely grateful and did as she asked. We did our best at the performance, and then we recruited her on stage right in front of her fans. We said, “since we came as guests this time, you’ll accept if we ask you for a feature in the future, right?” and she said yes. So we set out to make a song that suited IU’s voice, and thus “Love Story” came into the world. As for “Home is Far Away”, we considered who could make the emotions in the song explode, and concluded that Oh Hyuk would be good. So we sent him the guide track and waited. He’s usually hard to get in touch with, but it didn’t take long until he responded. “Hyung, the song is really good. I’ll sing it for you.”
Q: Did you try for any change in sound on this album?
Tukutz: We’re not clinging to trends or experiments anymore. We set out to focus on doing better at what we already do best with this album.
Q: Lots of artists who are strong on the chars have been making comebacks one after the other all autumn. Who did you feel the most intimidated by going up against?
Tablo: There was no one like that, but we knew Twice would make a comeback around the same time as us. My daughter Haru is a fan of theirs. Funnily enough, their music producer is close with our engineer. I heard that person came to visit our studio when the three of us weren’t there. Apparently they were curious about our comeback date.
Q: How did you imagine yourself in 10 years when you were rookies?
Mithra: Honestly, I was always so busy worrying about the next album that I didn’t have time to think about (how I would be) 10 years later.
Tablo: I thought I’d live a different life and that I would not be doing music, so I’m surprised we’re still here. There’s a song on our first album called “10 Years Later”. It’s a letter to myself in 10 years. What I imagined of myself back then was very ordinary. Rather than my life in the music industry, I wrote about common things like “you’ve probably become a father by now” etc. But surprisingly, I became a dad and kept doing music for over 10 years.
