Q: Some people have pointed out the part of Song Mino’s lyrics in “No Thanxxx” could be seen as derogatory towards women.
Tablo: Sincerely, nobody had any such intentions. If you look at the overall context of the song, the message we wanted to convey was satire of social conditions that are upheld by extremely subjective and careless judgment. Though it has a bit of a pinch, we wanted to tell people to find themselves with this song.
Q: Who would you like to work with in the future?
Tablo: Sung Sikyung. He’s supposed to pay us back for something. We once appeared as guests at his concert. That was during the time we weren’t’ promoting, so we performed with him at his concert for 2 days. He said “I’ll repay you”, so we asked him to make a song with us. However when we made this album, Sikyung hyung was also preparing for his comeback, so he was swamped. I really want to work with him next time. I’d like to take this opportunity to remind him that he owes us a debt. (laughter) While we’re already talking about this, if I am to mention some people who said they’d pay us back but forgot about it, there’s Park Junghyun (Lena Park) sunbaenim and Kim Hyunwoo hyung. (laughter)
Q: I’m curious about how your “Superman Returns” co-star Haru is doing.
Tablo: She’s growing up well. She’s grown so tall. Many fans are curious about how she’s doing, so my wife Kang Hyejung runs an sns account (Tabloisdad on Instagram) where she uploads photos of her. We’re not doing as many promotional activities as Epik High as we used to, so I have plenty of time with my family now. There are many times when I’m the only man at Haru’s parent-teacher meetings.
Q: You’re also in the midst of preparing for your November concerts.
Tablo: We invite different guests every year. We try hard to recruit people that will surprise our fans when they come to see us. We’ve recruited a few such people, and we weren’t going to reveal them before the concert, but Im Changjung sunbaenim revealed at his showcase yesterday (23/10) that he’s one of them. We’ll keep the others a secret and reveal them at the concert with a ‘ta-dah’. And when we go to perform at university festivals, Tukutz will mix in Im Changjung sunbaenim’s “The Love I Committed” in the midst of “Love Love Love” without permission and start singing it passionately out of nowhere. You’ll get to hear that song at this year’s festivals.
Q: What do you think is your greatest accomplishment over the past 14 years?
Mithra: Forming Epik High.
Tukutz: It’s similar for me. Before we debuted, I made music like an honorary member. Epik High was just Tablo and Mithra, and my role was that of a DJ. Then one day when we were in the car, Tablo asked “do you want to be a real member? Or would you rather stay an honorary member who composes?” I said “I want in” without a single second’s hesitation. I think that was the best decision I’ve made.
Tablo: There was a time when I thought I wouldn’t be able to get back into music, but I just kept trying. When I could have given up, I learned what I needed to, felt what I had to, fixed what I could and grew a lot in the process. I think that was my greatest achievement.
